As one of the most important cities in the Lycian League, it was renowned for its wealth and its status as a center for prophecy. Throughout history, the site has been shaped by Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and the Knights of St. John, each leaving behind layers of architectural heritage that can still be seen today.
In the 20th century, the city was renamed from Megri to Fethiye in honor of Fethi Bey, one of the first military pilots in the Ottoman Empire. Despite a major earthquake in 1958 that destroyed much of the city's older structure, it has been beautifully rebuilt, seamlessly integrating its ancient rock tombs and historical remnants into a modern, thriving maritime hub.
