Mostar

Mostar has served as a cultural crossroads for centuries, flourishing under Ottoman rule when it became a key administrative and trade center. The city's famous bridge, Stari Most, was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, representing a masterpiece of Balkan Islamic architecture that unified the banks of the Neretva River for hundreds of years. During the 20th century, the city experienced significant turmoil, particularly during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. The original Stari Most was tragically destroyed in 1993, but its reconstruction in the early 2000s stands as a powerful symbol of reconciliation and endurance. Today, visitors can see the layers of history reflected in both the preserved Ottoman-style houses and the poignant reminders of modern reconstruction, making Mostar one of Europe's most reflective and historically significant cities.
