Lille, historically known as L'Isle, emerged as a significant settlement in the Middle Ages, eventually becoming a centerpiece of the County of Flanders. Its strategic position turned it into a constant prize, alternating between French and Burgundian rule before officially becoming part of France under Louis XIV in the 17th century.
